Hire a Dedicated Development Team in Canada — Senior Engineers Who Own Delivery

A dedicated development team is a group of senior engineers who work exclusively on your product as a long-term extension of your own team — with shared accountability for outcomes, not just hours billed. MicroPyramid gives Canadian startups and SMBs that team: senior people who integrate with your roadmap and rituals, leave you owning all the code and IP, and scale up or down as you need — without a months-long hiring cycle.

For a Canadian buyer the model has a specific advantage: you engage MicroPyramid company-to-company for a contracted-out service — our engineers are our employees, not individual contractors — so CPP/EI classification rulings, personal-services-business analysis, and employment-standards questions stay off your books. You get CAD invoices via Stripe, PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25-aware working, and live standups in your Eastern-time morning with the work built while you sleep.

Why Canadian Teams Hire Us Instead of Hiring

Four reasons Canadian founders and CTOs choose a dedicated MicroPyramid team over recruiting in-house or juggling contractors

Contractor Classification Stays Our Problem, Not Yours

You engage MicroPyramid company-to-company for a fully contracted-out service — our engineers are our employees, not individual contractors. Canada’s rules target individuals and one-person corporations: a CRA ruling can retroactively deem a contractor an employee for CPP and EI, Ontario’s Employment Standards Act expressly prohibits misclassification, and an incorporated contractor risks personal-services-business treatment that strips their corporation’s tax advantages. None of that lands on you when you buy a managed service from a company — payroll, benefits, and classification obligations rest with us. We are engineers, not tax or employment lawyers, but this is precisely the engagement shape those rules distinguish from individual labour supply.

Live in Your Morning, Building While You Sleep

IST runs 9.5–10.5 hours ahead of Eastern Time, so the natural shared window is your morning — we hold standups and decisions live in your 8–11am Eastern window, then the team’s working day runs while North America is offline. Questions you raise in the live window are built through our next working day and are waiting as reviewed code when you log back in, backed by written updates so progress stays visible outside the shared hours.

PIPEDA & Quebec Law 25-Aware Working

Under PIPEDA, sending personal information to a processor abroad is a “use” that keeps you accountable — the OPC expects contractual safeguards giving a comparable level of protection, plus transparency, not extra consent. We sign data processing agreements built for exactly that, support Quebec Law 25’s privacy impact assessment where Quebec residents’ data is involved, and architect most engagements so production personal data stays in your environment — with AWS ca-central-1 (Montréal) available when Canadian data residency matters.

One CAD Invoice, Not a Payroll

CAD invoices via Stripe — a single B2B line item instead of salaries, employer CPP and EI contributions, provincial payroll taxes such as Ontario’s Employer Health Tax, vacation pay, recruiter fees, and termination-notice risk. Scale the team down and the invoice scales with it; there is no severance process.

Ways to Hire a Dedicated Team in Canada

Six ways to bring on senior engineers — from a full dedicated team to a single specialist or fractional tech lead

Dedicated Development Team

A senior team that works exclusively on your product as a long-term extension of yours — engaged as a contracted-out service from one company, not a chain of individual Canadian contractors each raising classification and personal-services-business questions.

  • Stable, dedicated engineers
  • Shared delivery accountability
  • Integrated with your roadmap

Team / Staff Augmentation

Slot senior engineers into your existing team to add capacity fast while your Canadian hiring pipeline catches up — working inside your process, tools, and sprint cadence, with a live window in your Eastern-time morning.

  • Embedded in your workflow
  • Senior individual contributors
  • Fast ramp-up, no long hiring cycle

Specialist Roles

Bring in a specific skill on demand — backend, frontend, AI, DevOps, or QA — without committing to a permanent hire you cannot yet justify in a tight Canadian talent market.

  • Backend, frontend & full-stack
  • AI / ML and DevOps specialists
  • Dedicated QA and test engineering

Fractional CTO / Tech Lead

Senior technical leadership without a full-time exec hire — architecture decisions, technical direction, and team guidance for Canadian founders building without a technical co-founder.

  • Architecture & tech-strategy calls
  • Hiring and code-quality standards
  • Roadmap and delivery oversight

Design-to-Build Product Pod

A whole pod — product, design, and engineering — that takes an idea from concept to shipped product without you assembling and managing the pieces yourself.

  • Product, design & engineering
  • Concept-to-launch ownership
  • One accountable team, not silos

Maintenance & Support Retainer

A dedicated team on retainer to keep your product healthy after launch — fixes, improvements, dependency and security upkeep, and predictable capacity billed in CAD.

  • Bug fixes & ongoing improvements
  • Dependency & security upkeep
  • Predictable retained capacity

When a Dedicated Team Makes Sense for a Canadian Business

If any of these match where you are, a dedicated team is probably worth a conversation

In-House Team at Capacity

Your engineers are fully booked and the backlog keeps growing, but filling a senior role in Toronto or Vancouver takes months. You need senior people who can own real work now, not just take tickets off the pile.

Startups That Need to Ship Faster

You have runway, investors expecting progress, and no appetite for a months-long hiring cycle. A ready dedicated team lets you start delivering in weeks instead of quarters.

Pulling Back From Individual Contractors

With CRA scrutiny of personal services businesses and the retroactive exposure a CPP/EI ruling or an employment-standards misclassification finding creates, many Canadian companies are cutting individual contractor engagements rather than carry classification risk. A contracted-out dedicated team restores that capacity without the classification admin.

You Need a Specialist Skill

You need AI, DevOps, or another specialist skill for a stretch of work but cannot justify — or find — a permanent Canadian hire for it yet. Bring the skill in for as long as the work lasts.

Founders Who Need a Whole Pod

You have an idea but no team. You need product, design, and engineering working together as one accountable pod, not separate contractors you have to coordinate yourself.

Non-Technical Founder

You are building a product without a technical co-founder and need a fractional tech lead plus a team that can make sound architecture and hiring decisions for you.

Best Fit For

  • Canadian teams that need senior engineers owning delivery, not just extra hands taking tickets
  • startups and SMBs that need to ship now without waiting out a months-long Canadian hiring cycle
  • companies that want contractor-style flexibility without classification risk and employment overheads
  • founders who need a whole pod — product, design, and engineering — working as one team

Not the Right Fit When

  • one-off tiny fixed-scope jobs — for a defined deliverable see project-based product delivery
  • companies chasing the absolute cheapest bodies with zero process or quality bar
  • roles that are genuinely permanent and core, where you should hire in-house and we would say so
  • work that must be performed onshore by security-cleared or Canadian-resident personnel — some government procurement and public-sector data rules require it, and a local team is the right call there

If you have a defined, one-off build rather than an ongoing team need, see Product Engineering for Canadian Teams for project-based delivery.

Public proof: Bough Digital is a UK agency whose platform a dedicated MicroPyramid team built and ran end-to-end, and Refactored.ai shows the same teams shipping complex AI-assisted product work.

Hire In-House, Canadian Contractors, or a Dedicated Team?

The honest version of the trade-off — including the classification and employment overheads most providers skip past

Hire in-house in Canada

Strong at

Full control, deep product context over time, and people whose only focus is your company and culture.

Watch out for

Senior engineering roles in Toronto or Vancouver take months to fill, with recruiter fees, employer CPP and EI contributions, provincial payroll taxes such as Ontario’s Employer Health Tax, vacation pay, and termination-notice obligations on top of salary — and scaling down again means severance, not a smaller invoice.

Pick when

Pick when the role is permanent and core, and you can absorb the hiring cycle and the employment overheads.

Canadian contractors or marketplaces

Strong at

Fast to start and flexible for small, well-defined tasks where you can supervise the work closely yourself.

Watch out for

Each individual engagement carries employee-vs-contractor classification risk: a CPP/EI ruling can land retroactive contributions and penalties on you, Ontario’s Employment Standards Act expressly prohibits misclassification, and incorporated contractors face personal-services-business reassessment — plus day-rate premiums, little continuity, and the direction and integration burden sits entirely on you.

Pick when

Pick for short, isolated tasks where you have the bandwidth to manage every piece of work and the classification questions.

Dedicated team with a partner (what we do)

Strong at

A stable senior team that owns delivery, engaged company-to-company so classification and employment overheads stay with us — and you own all the code and IP.

Watch out for

A real partnership needs onboarding and shared context up front, so it pays off most for sustained work, not a single afternoon fix.

Pick when

Pick when you need ongoing delivery owned by people you can trust, with the flexibility to scale without hiring and firing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what Canadian founders and CTOs ask us before hiring a dedicated team — including the contractor-classification, IP, and privacy questions most providers avoid.

What is a dedicated development team?

A dedicated development team is a group of senior engineers who work exclusively on your product as a long-term extension of your own team — but with shared accountability for outcomes, not just hours billed. Unlike rented bodies from a marketplace, a dedicated team builds context over time, integrates with your roadmap and rituals, and owns delivery so you are not left stitching the work together yourself.

Do we take on contractor-classification or payroll obligations when we hire a team through MicroPyramid?

No. When you engage MicroPyramid you are buying a fully contracted-out service from a company whose engineers are its own employees working from India — you are not engaging individual contractors. Canada’s classification rules target individuals and one-person corporations: the CRA can rule a contractor an employee and assess retroactive employer and employee CPP and EI contributions plus penalties, Ontario’s Employment Standards Act expressly prohibits treating an employee as a non-employee, courts recognise “dependent contractors” owed reasonable notice on termination, and an incorporated contractor serving one client risks personal-services-business treatment — losing the small business deduction and general rate reduction and paying an additional 5% federal tax (Income Tax Act s. 123.5) with almost no deductible expenses. None of those frameworks applies to a company-to-company managed service delivered by a vendor’s own employee base. The caveat is substance: the engagement must genuinely be a managed service rather than disguised individual labour supply, which is exactly how our pods work — we own delivery and outcomes. We are engineers, not tax or employment lawyers, so confirm structure with your advisers.

Dedicated team vs staff augmentation — what is the difference?

Staff augmentation slots one or more engineers into your existing team to add capacity, working under your management and process. A dedicated team is a standing unit that takes shared ownership of delivery — often with its own lead, rituals, and accountability for outcomes. Augmentation is the right call when you mainly need extra hands inside a team you already run; a dedicated team fits when you want a group that owns a product area or a whole build.

How is a dedicated team different from hiring in-house in Canada?

Hiring in-house gives you permanent employees and full control, but senior engineering roles in Toronto, Vancouver, or Montréal routinely take months to fill, and every hire adds recruiter fees, employer CPP and EI contributions, provincial payroll taxes such as Ontario’s Employer Health Tax, vacation pay, and termination-notice and severance obligations on top of salary. A dedicated team with a partner starts in weeks, arrives as one company-to-company CAD invoice rather than a payroll, and scales down without a severance process — while you still own all the code and IP that gets produced.

How quickly can a team start?

A dedicated team or augmented specialists can typically start within days to a couple of weeks, compared with the months a Canadian hiring cycle for senior engineers usually takes. We begin with a short discovery to agree roles, seniority mix, and the delivery plan, then assemble a team matched to your stack and onboard them into your repositories and rituals so they are productive quickly.

How much working-hours overlap do we get with Canada?

IST runs 9.5 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time and 10.5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so the natural shared window is your morning — we hold standups and decision-making live in your 8–11am Eastern window, every working day. The rest works follow-the-sun: questions you raise in the live window are built through our next working day, which runs while North America is offline, so decisions you make in your morning are waiting as reviewed code when you log in the next day. Written updates keep progress visible outside the shared hours, and for teams further west we agree the live window in discovery.

Can an offshore dedicated team work with personal data under PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25?

Yes, with the right paperwork and architecture. Under PIPEDA, transferring personal information to a service provider for processing is a “use”, not a disclosure — the OPC’s cross-border guidance asks for contractual safeguards giving a comparable level of protection and for transparency with the individuals concerned, not additional consent — and you remain accountable for the information. We support that directly: we sign data processing agreements that bind the team to your PIPEDA obligations, and we architect most engagements so production personal data stays in your environment — for example on AWS ca-central-1 (Montréal) — with least-privilege, audited access for the team and staging data used wherever possible. Where Quebec residents’ data is involved, Law 25 requires a privacy impact assessment before personal information is communicated outside Québec and a written agreement covering the transfer; we provide the security and safeguard documentation that assessment needs.

Who owns the IP a dedicated team produces under Canadian law?

You do — but only if the contract is done properly, because Canadian copyright law is stricter than most buyers assume. Under the Copyright Act, only an employee’s work vests in their employer automatically; an independent contractor is first owner of what they create, an assignment of copyright is only valid if it is in writing and signed (s. 13(4)), and moral rights can never be assigned, only expressly waived (s. 14.1). A generic NDA transfers nothing. Our contracts assign all intellectual property in the work to you in writing and include moral-rights waivers from the team, and the code is committed to your repositories as we build — so ownership never depends on goodwill at the end of the engagement.

Does offshore development work qualify for SR&ED?

Generally no, and you should be wary of any vendor implying otherwise. SR&ED tax incentives apply to eligible experimental development carried out in Canada, so payments for development work performed outside Canada are not qualified expenditures. If your in-house Canadian team does eligible R&D alongside our delivery — and the program became more generous in 2026, with the enhanced-credit expenditure limit raised to $6 million and capital expenditures restored — we document our deliverables, interfaces, and technical decisions clearly so your claim preparer can separate the eligible Canadian-performed work. Choose a development partner for delivery quality, not for SR&ED reasons, and confirm specifics with your tax adviser; we are engineers, not tax advisers.

Who manages the team day-to-day?

You choose the model that fits. A dedicated pod can run with its own lead who manages day-to-day delivery and reports to you, so you stay focused on direction rather than task management. With staff augmentation, the engineers usually work under your own managers and process. Either way you get clear reporting, visibility into progress, and a senior point of contact accountable for outcomes.

What drives the cost of a dedicated team?

The main cost drivers are team size, the seniority mix, how specialised the skills are (AI/ML and DevOps specialists cost more than generalist capacity), and how long you need the team with continuity. Regulated work — OSFI-supervised financial services, healthcare touching PHIPA records, or systems holding Quebec residents’ data under Law 25 — adds review and documentation effort. We scope these in a short discovery sprint and give you a fixed estimate before the team starts, billed in CAD via Stripe; as a non-resident supplier we do not charge GST/HST, and GST/HST-registered businesses using the service in their commercial activities generally have no self-assessment obligation — confirm the details with your accountant.
